’Darn good read.’

DEAD BEFORE MORNING #1

A murder victim with no face. A media calling for answers. And a detective with a family not averse to a little gentle law-bending.

Newly-promoted British Detective Joe Rafferty and his partner, Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn in a murder mystery involving the killing of a young woman bludgeoned beyond recognition, with no ID and found in a secure place to which she supposedly had no admission. Who is she? How has she gained access? And who was responsible for her murder?

DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN #2

A murder victim with no enemies. A dead patriarch. And a detective who’s struggling.

British Detectives Joe Rafferty and his partner, Dafyd Llewellyn, in their second murder mystery investigation, set out to discover who killed Barbara Longman, a woman with no known enemies. But it soon becomes apparent that the murder has been committed by someone who must have known the victim very well.

DEATH LINE #3

A murdered seer who failed to predict his own future. A partner who refuses to see the murder as an inside job. And a Detective who wonders where the answer lies past; present; future?

Third novel in the Rafferty & Llewellyn mystery series, Death Line sees the detective duo trying to solve the murder with his own crystal ball, of the famed 'seer', Jasper Moon. Gradually it becomes clear that Jasper Moon was a man of many parts, not all of them appeared very savory.

THE HANGING TREE #4

A disappearing murder victim no one would miss. A witness destined to haunt him. And a Detective who felt ambivalent about getting a conviction.

The detective pair investigates the murder mystery of the vanishing hanged man. But when the hanged man turns up in Dedman Woods for the second time, the British detectives are able to confirm that he is a man many had reason to hate. Because Maurice Smith, charged years earlier with four child rapes, had escaped on a legal technicality. Was someone acting as the public executioner, dealing out their own form of justice on the legendary Hanging Tree?

If you like the Detective Bill Slider novels, the Dalziel and Pascoe series, and Stephanie Plum, the Rafferty 18-strong series brings the wit, wisdom, and willingness to bend the law with the best of them.

Buy this book to learn about Joe Rafferty, his ne’er-do-well family, and po-faced partner.

RAFFERTY LLEWELLYN BOXED SET BOOKS 1 TO 4 British Detectives eBook Geraldine Evans

I found myself reading quickly through all four books in this set, on the strength of its engaging protagonists, Rafferty and Llewellyn. The gregarious, impulsive Irishman and the staid, intellectual Welshman could hardly be more opposite, yet they learn to work together and allow themselves to grow in the process.

Evans's writing is deft. Readers who understand correct use of apostrophes will find themselves repeatedly annoyed, but the plots, with their arrays of well-drawn, plausible suspects, will carry the day. My only real quarrel is that the endings come suddenly out of the blue. A mystery reader likes to puzzle out the case along with the investigator, especially when his or her struggles with the case are so satisfyingly rendered. But Evans tends toward suddenly having everything fall into place, sometimes adding information the reader couldn't know or expect, sometimes creating the deus ex machina of a sudden twist of luck or fate.

That said, the stories have just enough reflective depth to keep them from feeling like fluff. I would happily read future additions to the series.

RAFFERTY LLEWELLYN BOXED SET BOOKS 1 TO 4 British Detectives eBook Geraldine Evans Reviews

Very well written, an excellent who done it that keeps you guessing and watching closely for clues. The clues are all there too, which makes the reveal fun instead of frustrating. It is only lacking that fifth star because at times it seems to go too slowly, but that is probably how real police work happens. If I could give partial stars it would only have a bit of that last star blank.
Just finished reading all four in this series. Always enjoy a good mystery, and all four of them were. Also enjoy the personal life she shows on all characters.
On the whole this a very entertaining series, the stories are entertaining and the endings are a little predictable yet well executed. I enjoy the characters and the rich family life in the background. Only one fault, and that story become a little repetitive within the books.
I am wanting a movie or series from these books. Especially, "The Hanging Tree". Rafferty's moral dilemma is thought provoking on how much energy, really, should he exert to catch Smith's killer or killers. And doesn't Smith have peace now? It is the Holiday season. I am a huge fan of the British Mysteries. Agatha Christie is still the queen though. I spent a couple of nights reading later than I should have to see whodunit. And I like the 4 book collection as it gives your readers a larger sample of the author's work. I'm looking into all her other books. She is a great author!!!
It is argued that an American, Poe, wrote the first murder short story but there's no doubt that the British have produced the Queens of murder mystery writing.

Irish Inspector Rafferty and and his dour Welsh Sergeant plod through confounding cases with humor and a persistence that can only be enjoyed with the wonderful accents and turns-of-phrase peculiar to the British Isles.

The author has a wonderful ear for conversation. Not to mention, her insight into human nature. The pages are filled with quirky, memorable people who find themselves mired in confounding mysteries. But never fear, Inspector Rafferty solves the cases in a satisfying way every time.
The Rafferty characters are a delight! My fave is flawed, scruffy, a bit uncouth, unstoppable, oddly brilliant, softie Rafferty, but he wouldn't be Rafferty without Llewellyn, and certainly not without Ma and all the rest of the constellation of other so-very-human people around him. I guess I think of something like a pot of stew, with bits of meat and all sorts of veggies and herbs and spices and dumplings, simmered till all the flavors (flavours!) meld deliciously. The plot is good too.
I read the first four books in succession. I think I would have enjoyed them more with a break in between. The two main characters reminded me of the Inspector Lewis series I'd seen, mainly in their relationship. The characters definitely have their own unique personalities.
The cases are fairly interesting with sufficient red herrings. However Raffertys process of jumping to conclusions, generally incorrect, was a trifle annoying.
Humor abounds via Raffertys family.
All in all, good read but not on a par with more notable authors.
