It’s not every day that your roommate accidentally teleports you across time and space, but Jennifer MacDonald is not having an ordinary day. A chance encounter with a custom-built computer and an ancient pyramid sends Jennifer to a faraway land with six warring civilizations and an ancient prophecy that has a visitor from the stars at its heart. All she has to do is unseal one measly, missing god. Now the fate of an alien world is in the hands of a gal who’s never landed a steady job or boyfriend, but at least she has watched a few years’ worth of archeology documentaries. Hopefully that will be enough to get by, since it seems like most of Earth’s lost civilizations ended up stranded in this extraterrestrial zoo too. Also, there is the trivial matter of a Mayan assassin sent to kill her… We are all our own worst enemies, but maybe Jennifer has a chance to break that mold.

The Download features a fantastic universe ripped from the pages of Star Wars and Avatar. The characters are well thought out, the world is dripping in imagination, fantasy, and tech-organics... The story line leaves you wanting more, made me wish I had my own Construct Alpha Level Assistant (CALA) in my head. Glowing gem and all.

I hope R.E. Carr makes this into a series, I would love to be part of this universe again.

Please note: I received an advance copy of The Download from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I gave this book 5 star rating it kept me interested all the way through. The characters work well together there is excitement they was fantasy it was really good book. And I read it too fast I think I'm tired. I will probably read more of this author's books because they are different
I was incredibly blessed to receive an advanced copy of The Download. While I have enjoyed reading the Rules Undying series, The Download been my favorite by far.

My interests usually lean more towards fantasy than Sci-fi, so it takes a certain kind of book to keep my interest, and R.E. Carr definitely delivered. I hope to see more from her in the future!
Another great book from the mind of R.E. Carr. Entirely different from her other series of books, but absolutely worth a read. I really hope she decides to branch out and make this into a series too; there's a lot more story to be told in this universe.

(Disclaimer I was provided an early review copy for purposes of review)
The world Carr has created is wildly imaginative and completely believable. Jen’s mad scientist roomie is experimenting and, unfortunately, Jen becomes a variable. She is transported via funky rock to another dimension where she’s given a choice die or be reconstructed (add AI unit and vigorously stir) to help a god. Not much of a choice, to be sure. *takes deep breath* And then things really get crazy. Jen ends up in a beast world—think Planet of the Apes, but a lot more diversity than gorillas, orangs and chimps. One of my favorite things about The Download is the way the characters evolve. I love that the AI (Artificial Intelligence, I know, I know, you knew) unit doesn't remain static, CALA changes and is as much a character as the flesh and blood ones. If you love a rollicking tale that makes you think, I strongly recommend this book.
Another imaginative winner from SFF author R.E. Carr! Unlike her Rules Undying series, this novel does not include vampires or werewolves, but rather a twisting plot featuring multiple POV's, worlds, and transmissions from a computer. For those who don't like long hardware descriptions, this is the book for you! Incorporating low tech posited as magic and a whirlwind pace, Carr makes you wish for the second in the series before you're even done with the first. Part STAR WARS, part 2001, this is just pure fun all the way.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it. The characters were believable and the writing was crisp and flowed wonderfully. I'm a high sci-fi fan and this was a pleasant surprise, so happy I discovered this author.
I have read Carr’s Rules Undying series, that only has 3 books so far, and this book had what I liked about that series ... it is really unique and rather wtf worthy. The download is more of a sci-fi genre book however. There is dimension traveling, gods who may or mayn't be computers, super smart computers and AI helpers that install into your brain and help the main character to translate and get along in a foreign world. Oh, and Jen got shunted to that dimension all because her super smart roommate built some weird thing out of computers and a rock.... It certainly makes you wonder which part of what is real. There were more than one "copy" of her in that world that came in at different times ... there is a lot to explain about that book. It is definitely crazy, it is rough about the edges, and I think could do with more editing, but it has a solid base that just drew me in and made me want to keep reading it till I was done.
When this book first came out I read the sample and wasn’t very impressed with what I got. The story was interesting, but the actual writing drove me a bit bonkers….
He did this, he did that, he smacks himself in the forehead….
She did this, she did that, and she whacked her head on her desk….
There were too many sentences that started with he or she in the first part of the book. Since I got a price alert on the book I decided to try it again since I could read past the first bit and boy am I glad I did.
I can’t say for sure if I love or hate this book, but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and was entertained the whole time I did so. Some things that bothered me were the he’s and she’s at the start of the book, the over usage of “snarled”, “snapped”, or “smirked” with the dialogued. It seemed too much at times and rendered the main characters as angsty teenagers or something to me. One of the other things was the amount of emotions the characters showed. A lot of the times it seemed to be more a tell rather than show thing when it came to those. Some of them were a total surprise to me when I read them to be honest.
Over all I enjoyed reading this book and will most likely do so again, especially if there is a sequel which I can see happening thanks to that ending. One of the things I enjoy most about her books is the amount of imagination she has in using the familiar bits of lore and ideas of popular fiction out there today. Carr takes the shades of the familiar (like werewolves, vampire, dimension travel, Mayan and Greco mythology/lore, and technology) and mixes them up with her special brand of WTF to create a wholly different (and not) entertaining story. A type of story that isn’t like most of the other offerings out there that have the same sort of things in the same genres. I’m excited to read what Carr comes up with next and to witness the smoothing out of the rough edges, because I see a lot of promise in the future stories for sure.
